I love farro for its texture, specifically the nuttiness it adds to a dish, but I don’t love it for its price tag. It’s also not exactly gluten-free, so it has become an ingredient that I enjoy once in a blue moon when the mood really strikes. Well, the other night the mood struck. As I was walking through the isles of my local market with arugula in my basket, craving something refreshing for dinner, I happened to notice a bag of farro on the shelf. It’s rare that my local market has this delectable grain in stock, so after a bit of brain churning, and a little drooling over fresh herbs that I spotted in a nearby isle, I tossed the farro into my basket. After a great Fourth of July weekend, I returned home to a whole watermelon sitting on my kitchen counter. It had been there, leftover from a supper club dinner, staring me in the face for a few weeks and I have been stumped as to what to do with it. What better way to use your dinner leftovers, than for breakfast the next morning. After a successful veggie dog feast last night, I decided to take the leftover homemade relish and put it on top of an Ezekiel english muffin with homemade hummus and a little red wine vinegar.

Thanks to a certain someone, I’ve recently taken on bike riding as a frequent activity and way to whip my ass into shape. Yesterday, we conquered some bridges and spent the day riding to and from Brooklyn and Manhattan. When we got home, I felt accomplished and hungry! It was time to reward ourselves with a filling meal and veggie dogs were calling our names.
