This week I had the opportunity to bake some sweet treats for the lovely Thistle & Clover boutique in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The awesome ladies who run this adorable shop hosted a trunk show with two of their fantastic designers, Jene DeSpain and Guy French, and I made some cute cookies and brownies to satisfy the hungry after work crowd browsing the gorgeous jewels and blazers on display. After deciding on almond butter lapsang brownies, I thought I might browse one of my favorite food blogs for a second, less chocolaty idea and so I came across these lemon and lavender cookies on Elana’s Pantry. Someone mentioned french toast the other day and suddenly I had a huge craving that seemed to be lasting for days. Since it’s not often that I crave sweet flavors for breakfast, I decided to take advantage of this sweet tooth when I woke up on Saturday morning. Instead of the traditional way of making it, I thought I would browse the world wide web for some different variations. I was curious how people made vegan french toast, and my search results included many recipes using bananas and soy or hemp milk instead of eggs. Continue reading “Vegan Banana French Toast” »

This Saturday marked the second successful run of Brooklyn Fork & Spoon supper club. Aside from the fantastic group of guests, one of the big highlights of the dinner was the first course – a sweet and savory bruschetta. I’m a sucker for anything truffle, and after a fun trip to Mint in Tarrytown last weekend, I returned with a big jar of truffle salt that I knew I needed to incorporate into Saturday’s menu.

I had never thought about making quinoa for breakfast, until I came across Heidi Swanson’s recipe on 101 Cookbooks. The thought of it made me feel all warm and cozy inside so I of course decided to make it for…err…dinner. Franky, I couldn’t wait until breakfast to taste this. I made enough to have leftovers for breakfast the next few days though and I’m certainly glad I did!

My cousin and I were born about 3 months apart and we share most things in common, except for his love of anything with chocolate and peanut butter. For whatever reason, I’ve never been one to order peanut butter flavored anything on the dessert menu. I seem to be a rarity as I find myself surrounded by many friends who like to eat the stuff straight from the jar. Don’t get me wrong- I love a good PB&J sandwich, but I don’t reach for the spoon when a jar of Jif is around. The cake pictured above that I made for my cousin’s 28th birthday, however, has possibly made me a convert.

This one goes out to all of the breakfast for dinner fans out there (and to a few very special ones in particular). My sweet tooth came back the other night so I attempted to nip it in the bud by making some pancakes. I’ve also had beets on the mind lately, so I thought I would go ahead and try to combine the two and sure enough what you see pictured above turned out to be a tasty hit-the-spot dinner.
