Sorrel Soup

Every summer for the past fourteen years, I’ve been traveling to the small town of Kent, Connecticut to visit my parents at their summer camp. Being a seasonal area, restaurants have a way of coming and going in this quaint community and it’s always a little heartbreaking when the good ones fade, but I look forward to seeing and tasting what’s around the corner. This year, when my mom informed me of a new farm to table restaurant on the main strip, I quickly hopped the Metro-North to check it out for myself.  My parents picked me up at the train station and we drove straight to dinner at the new Millstone Cafe. Thyme In The Countrry Breakfast

Rounding out a weekend of incredible food, interesting people and inspiring places was the quaint bed and breakfast that housed us on our trip- Thyme In The Country. This eco-friendly spot is situated on a gorgeous farm right outside of the town of Hudson, NY. I’m certainly not the first to say that this is the place to stay if you ever find yourself in the area. Aside from the peaceful atmosphere, homey feel and adorable decor, Mary, the owner of Thyme In The Country, will make your stay incredibly comfortable and memorable with her big smile, delicious home cooked meals and excellent knowledge of the area – especially some lesser known spots that are worth a visit. Pickled Vegetable Plate

After an eventful Saturday in Hudson, we had some time for more adventuring on our way home on Sunday and naturally, our first stop was lunch. Since we were a bit clueless about the surrounding area, we turned to our favorite restaurant at the Ramp Fest- Another Fork In The Road. After some google mapping and a few wrong turns, we finally stumbled upon this tiny roadside cafe in the little town of Milan, NY. We were greeted with smiling faces and when we shared the news that we had been huge fans of their ramp creations, they in return shared their excitement to feed us with complimentary dishes that left us itching for more. Ramp Fest

This past weekend, I took advantage of the gorgeous weather and traveled up to Hudson, NY for the first ever Ramp Fest. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and after an hour of food sampling I was both impressed and a little bit underwhelmed – and dehydrated. One train ride and one car rental later, we arrived hungry at the big beautiful Basilica building. Continue reading “Ramp Fest Roundup” »

Don’t miss the very first Ramp Fest this Saturday in Hudson, NY! I’ll be training up to Hudson and riding my bike over to the Basilica to enjoy special ramp recipes from some exciting local chefs. I first discovered the gorgeous wild leek at my local market last year, but with a hefty price tag, I unfortunately did not experiment with them as much as I would have liked to. So, I’m certainly looking forward to stuffing myself silly with all of the creative dishes this weekend. Full report and recipes to come!

Black Garlic

I can always count on my roommate’s mom to send me fun recipes or articles on the latest it foods. She’s been a Sprout & Pea follower from the start, and I’ve always appreciated her support, interest and fun emails! Last week, I woke up to an email from her entitled Black Garlic. The body of the email simply read, “Have you heard of it?”. I hadn’t. So, I immediately leaped out of bed and onto my computer (and then back into bed with my computer. It was early, and a Saturday). As I snuggled in for a relaxing morning and started googling, I became fascinated and eager to try this mysterious black garlic for myself. Continue reading “Garlic Just Got Better” »
