Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I went home to visit my family in Miami.  After my second Thanksgiving dinner, I didn’t think I had any room left for food, but my parents insisted on taking me to brunch at their new favorite spot, Michael’s Genuine, and I’m certainly glad they did! Not only is the food here incredible and the menu unique, they source all of their ingredients from local, sustainable farmers, fisherman and artisans and their menu changes daily, depending upon what is in season.

All of their dishes are small, well priced and served as they’re ready, catering to family-style sharing. Pictured above is the first dish that came out: Bourbon Bacon Bread Pudding. It was perfectly sweetened with little crunches of bacon in each bite — in other words, completely mouthwatering.  After pondering over the completely unusual drink options, I decided on the Cherry Rosemary Soda which was by far one of the best drinks I’ve ever tasted — just the right amount of sweet.

With so many restaurants in New York that support local food production, I was so happy to see Miami finally catching on with this gem of a restaurant. They’ve also partnered with the Wholesome Wave Foundation to help make fresh, local produce available to everyone through Roots In The City Farmers Market.  Through the program, Federal Food Stamps are doubled in value when used at participating farmers markets. These guys were recently awarded Slow Food USA’s first Snail of Approval in Miami and boy do they deserve it! Below are a few more of the incredibly tasty dishes that we enjoyed at Michael’s Genuine…

That pumpkin french toast looks amazing. I’m also really happy to see Miami finally catching on to the local produce/ect. style restaurants.…I’ll have to try this restaurant when I go back home.

Your meal looks delicious! Here in Miami, Michael’s Genuine is an oasis for me! It’s so nice to have a place in Miami where the food is prepared with so much care and thought. Next time, you have to try the eggplant salad (it’s so warm and comforting) and the crispy rice cake with chorizo and Florida rock shrimp. All that with a good beer. Delicious.
